I know that it has been a couple days since I have posted, but after reading this you will know why. As you will read I have made the switch, the conversion.
Have I made the conversion to Islam? Nope but I did do my studies on it and even considered it a couple of times while married to MOHCINE. Did I make the switch to real butter or to Splenda? Did I make the official switch to Firefox? Yes but that isn’t the switch that I’m referring to. I “made the switch,” the conversion from Windows to Linux. This would explain where my time has gone besides working on finishing up a site for a client.
I was starting to backup all my files a couple days ago as I was ready to format my drive and reinstall windows. My computer was really starting to lag so I figured it was ready for a fresh installation. When I said to my buddy Indie he says to me, “you coming over to Linux?” I said no pretty much right away because of my last experience with Redhat Linux a few years back, with my experience with Redhat after just 1-2 days of being confused out of my mind. I quickly switched back to Windows so I wasn’t real sure if I was ready to jump on board again.
So after giving it some actual thought and thinking of how Windows does use up a lot of resources on my laptop. I went ahead and went for it. So now I Finally made the big switch to Linux. As I mentioned above not only have I made the switch from Linux but made the switch to Firefox. I’ve always had Firefox installed but more or less used it to view websites while creating them since IE and FF don’t’ read HTML the same for some unknown reason. I tell ya I feel more like a geek now then I ever have before. And even more so when I say that Linux is one very sexy OS, I have always thought it was even with my horrific experience with Redhat. This time I chose Ubuntu it is simple, to the point, looks fantastic, and it runs like a champ. And with having Wine (no, not my favorite thing to drink) installed which is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X, OpenGL, and Unix. I can still run some of my much needed Windows applications. These would include but not be limited to… Dreamweaver and Photoshop. Wine was also suggested by Indie I am sure he will be very excited to know that I have “made the switch.”
You can find more information about this great distribution of Linux and get a live/install ISO image at the Ubuntu home page. The live ISO image is really nice because you can run Linux on your PC without installing it thus giving you full access to play. I also think that it’s really cool that while running the live CD playing around with it surfing the net and chatting with friends, I was actually installing Linux and partioning my drive in the background.
Now with this my blog will have more geekiness in it as I will try to share some of my experiences, suggestions and so on. I guess I really am a true geek, being in love with a Penguin.
