Women and Chocolate

chocolateWhat is it about chocolate, and why do nearly all women love it so much? Why do even some prefer it over sex?

Besides it’s great taste that puts a grin on your face with every little bite as it melts in your mouth.

Chocolate contains phenylethylamine, which is a chemical related to amphetamines. The results is that we feel more alert and contentment. It also makes the brain release endorphins, think about how you feel after the BIG O with your significant other. That is the effect from the production of endorphins in your body, which is probably a good reason a number of women prefer to eat chocolate over sex. I would think it’s because its almost guaranteed to satisfy you every time. Phenylethylamine also mimics the feeling you have when your in love, with high levels of phenylethylamine in your body it also relieves depression. This is another one of the reasons why so many women love chocolate – it’s a great mood elevator, from those stressful days at work and or with our families as we take care of everyone. I know that when I’m a lil down I WANT CHOCOLATE!

Church Finger

Lela and I have been watching our Tyler Perry plays and started to wonder after seeing it done a few times and remembered seeing older ladies in church doing it along with in other movies. What the origin of the right index finger up while excusing yourself from church is. After doing some reading (and I’m not sure how accurate it is) this is what I found…

During the slavery days when the masters took their slaves with them to public gatherings, the slaves would always sit in the balcony. When the slave had to go to the bathroom or wanted to be excused for any other reason, they would hold their hand up and keep it up until their master acknowledged that they saw their hand and gave them permission to leave. After the slave was given permission to leave, they would hold up one finger as they were leaving to inform anyone that saw them leave that they had been excused.

So I wonder if this is true and if the people who do this knew this, would they still do it? I’m guessing not..

The Shape of our Hearts

Lela was making cupcakes this morning and one of them came out looking like a heart (the actual organ) and then we thought of how did the heart we associate with love get it’s shape.

Where does the shape of a heart come from and how do we associate it with Love

Here are a few ideas…

Cyrene CoinIdea #1 Ancient North African Orgin

During the seventh century B.C., the city-state of Cyrene* had a lucrative trade in a rare, now-extinct plant: silphium. Although it was mostly used for seasoning, silphium was reputed to have an off-label use as a form of birth control. The silphium was so important to Cyrene’s economy that coins were minted that depicted the plant’s seedpod (shown to the right), which looks like the heart shape we know today. The theory goes that the heart shape first became associated with sex, and eventually, with love. I seem to like this idea more then the other two.

Sacred HeartIdea #2 Catholic Church Orgin

The Catholic Church contends that the modern heart shape did not come along until the 17th century, when Saint Margaret Mary Alocoque had a vision of it surrounded by thorns. This symbol became known as the Sacred Heart of Jesus and was associated with love and devotion; it began popping up often in stained-glass windows and other church iconography. But while the Sacred Heart may have popularized the shape, most scholars agree that it existed much earlier than the 1600s.

Idea #3 The Less Romantic Orgin

Some claim that the modern heart-shape simply came from botched attempts to draw an actual human heart, the organ which the ancients, including Aristotle, believed contained all human passions. One leading scholar of heart iconography claims that the philosopher’s physiologically inaccurate description of the human heart—as a three-chambered organ with a rounded top and pointy bottom—may have inspired medieval artists to create what we now know as the heart shape. The medieval tradition of courtly love may have reinforced the shape’s association with romance. Hearts can be found on playing cards, tapestries, and paintings.

What Happened to Library Etiquette?

Back in the day it used to be taught that you were to be quiet while in a library. What ever happen to this? Isn’t a library supposed to be a nice quiet place to go for research, studying, and just simply relaxing while reading a book? Aren’t the librarians supposed to enforce this quiet atmosphere?

I bring this up because lately we have been visiting our local library. We are either there for the kids to get books to read or I sometimes go there to work. And let me tell you it is no where close to being quiet. Not only do we have people’s cell phone’s ringing (hello phones have a vibrate function for a reason!), people yapping on their phones (ever heard of taking the call outside or not answering it), speaking at all levels (what happened to whispering). But the employees are loud them selves, I believe there should be no reason why I need to hear your conversation on the other side of the building. There is a room off to the side that they even have live music being played in. They have a door for this room but what is the purpose of it if you don’t shut it.

I don’t know, i guess it’s just a pet peeve of mine.

What’s the Purpose of Underwear?

briefsJust the other day I was getting dressed and talking to Lela at the same time. Something made me ask, what is the real purpose of underwear? After that I decided to search it and here are some of the answers that came up…

  1. Support and protect your genital
  2. It protects you from chafing with the clothes
  3. To keep your outer clothes cleaner

Now here are some of the more amusing answers

  1. It’s a block for pervs trying to see up skirts
  2. It keeps the little soldier from getting hooked on the zipper
  3. You know those guys that wear their pants around their ankles? Underwear is what keeps me from having to look at their bums
  4. So people can do wedgies
  5. To keep the junk in the trunk and the girls under control
  6. So you have more laundry to do

What’s your thoughts???
