Mount Soledad

I was bored out of my mind today, it was getting rather depressing. I also wanted Brandon to stop playing his X-Box so I told him to get dressed we were going out. Having no real money to spend I had to think of something to do for nothing. So I decided we would check out Mt Soledad.

For you who don’t know Mt Soledad is a Memorial in La Jolla. It has been very controversial due to the cross that was on public property. WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE THESE DAYS? So we have had many proposistions to vote on regarding if we should keep it or not. I of course voted to keep it. The Federal Governement now has control over it.

Here is a short little history on it from the Mount Soledad Memorial Associate website

  • First used as a Memorial Park in 1914
  • Used by the Lindberghs for glider flights in the 1920’s
  • Part of the military’s early-warning defense system in WWII
  • 29-foot Latin cross dedicated on April 29, 1954 to honor Korean War veterans
  • Long used by planes and ships for navigation
  • Transferred to Federal Government August 14, 2006 as National Veterans Memorial
  • You can see just about all of San Diego from the top of this mountain. And while driving up to it, you get to drive by multi million dollar homes. I asked Brandon if he would buy me one when he makes lots of money.

The top of the mountain. The very first time I had ever come here there was just the cross and some grass (wasn’t even the fence around the cross like now)

Then about 6 years or so ago I came back with MOHCINE They added the steps and fence around the cross.

Now its a full on Memorial.

The Northwest view (not the best day for picture taking)

Northeast view of the Mormon Temple. It is so beautiful. One day I will see about going to take some pictures. But I have heard stories that it’s hard to get inside with out being Mormon. Not sure if it’s true. More information found here

After that we drove through Pacific Beach and on to meet MOHCINE at work where we all then went to have dinner.

I love visiting memorials but it can be so heartbreaking. I went to the Oklahoma City Bombing memorial and I must have cried for 2 straight hours.
